Abdul Shahid

Mohammed Abdul Shahid, originally from what was then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), arrived in the UK in December 1967 at the age of 11.5 to join his father in Oxford.

As one of the earliest Bengali students in his school, he faced significant challenges, including isolation and bullying, especially from West Pakistani students due to political tensions between East and West Pakistan. A pivotal moment came when a compassionate English woman intervened, helping bridge understanding and gain him protection from a former bully turned friend.

After visiting Salisbury, Shahid fell in love with the town’s welcoming atmosphere and decided to stay. He entered the restaurant trade and eventually became a successful entrepreneur, opening multiple restaurants across the South West. Despite health setbacks, he continued to work, raise his children with cultural awareness, and give back to both his local and Bangladeshi communities supporting people in need, building homes, and even creating innovative dishes. His story reflects resilience, adaptation, and a deep sense of responsibility across cultures.
