Hugh Hamilton
Hugh Hamilton was born in 1938 in Lahore during the British Raj. His family, including his sister, Phyllis who belonged to the Anglo-Indian community, enjoyed colonial privileges such as large homes and domestic staff.
Hugh recalls a childhood that felt insulated “a bubble” separated from the broader Indian society. Partition came as a shock, and like many Anglo-Indians, Hugh eventually migrated to the UK.
Though raised in an environment of colonial hierarchy, he formed early bonds with Indian children and later grew to appreciate multiculturalism. Hugh’s story is a rare lens on the fading world of colonial privilege and the evolution of Anglo-Indian identity in post-imperial Britain.
