Bashart Malik

Bashart Malik, born in 1975 to Pakistani parents, grew up immersed in the challenges and contradictions of diasporic life in a working-class setting.

His parents were part of the generation invited to Britain to help rebuild the post-war economy; his father worked in hard labour industries, instilling resilience and a strong sense of pride in their cultural roots. Bashart’s upbringing was shaped by everyday resistance to racism, collective community strength, and a need to define identity beyond the labels imposed by others.

He reflects on the value of legacy and memory, and the healing role of storytelling. His pride in being British Pakistani is unshaken, even as he continues to speak critically about injustice, social systems, and integration. Bashart advocates for young people to reclaim their roots, stand tall in their identities, and build inclusive narratives in the places they call home.
