Batista M Fernandes
Batista Fernandes was born in Goa and worked for over 20 years as a taxi driver before immigrating to the UK in 2002 through a Portuguese passport, supported by his sister.
Initially struggling with homesickness and cultural adjustment, he found strength in community, kindness, and consistent work. Batista shared accommodation with others, helped newcomers secure jobs, and emphasised humility, generosity and adaptability.
He reflects on the immense lifestyle change between Goa and Swindon, but appreciates the comfort, opportunity, and improved standard of living he has found. Despite hardships, he remains deeply grateful.
