Chhaya Thanki
Chhaya is a 2nd generation Gujarati sharing her experiences growing up in Scotland after her family was displaced from Uganda in 1972.
She has faint memories of Uganda but vividly remembers the culture shock of arriving in Scotland. She struggled with the English language, bullying, and the unfamiliar weather. After moving to Southampton, she continued to face bullying and racial slurs. However, she found support from one friend and gradually felt more accepted.
Chhaya expresses pride in her father's community involvement and her dual British and Asian identity. She highlights the difficulties immigrants face when arriving in the UK and wants people to understand their struggles. She appreciates that her family came to the UK for better opportunities.
