Junab Ali

Junab Ali, originally from Sylhet, Bangladesh, moved to the UK in 1984 at the age of 15 to join his father, settling in Royal Wootton Bassett in 1978.

Arriving without English, he quickly adapted by watching television shows like Grange Hill and immersing himself in local school life. His family was among the first Bangladeshis in the area, facing racism and curiosity from the community, but with time and perseverance, Junab built strong relationships and made a positive impact locally.

He entered the catering industry, eventually running his own restaurants, and went on to become an active community leader. His dedication and service culminated in his appointment as Mayor of Swindon, a role that reflects both his personal journey and the growing multicultural representation in British civic life.

Junab remains proud of raising his children with an understanding of both British values and their Bangladeshi heritage, believing in the importance of hard work and cultural pride.
