Malathi Venki
Malathi describes her journey from a conservative family in India to the UK in 1967 after marrying a doctor.
She arrived with her young son and experienced a smooth transition in County Durham, noting the friendly community and lack of racism.
Moving to Bournemouth brought some initial isolation, but she eventually made friends with her neighbours. Encouraged to pursue counselling, she developed a career in the NHS. Malathi shares her surprise at aspects of British culture upon her arrival, like going to Boots and adapting to English cuisine, although she recalls parties where she was less fond of the food.
She maintains her Hindu faith while considering herself British. She reflects on the changes she has seen over the years, noting how society has become more conservative in Bournemouth compared to her early experiences in Durham.
