Ramesh Lal

Ramesh migrated from Kenya to the UK in 1971 at the age of 11, amid his family's hopes for better opportunities post-independence.

Life in Kenya was idyllic and family-oriented, but the UK posed cultural and economic adjustments. Arriving in Coventry, the family lived in cramped housing with limited facilities. Though initially shocked by working-class British life, Ramesh adapted quickly, enjoying school lunches and integrating into British life.

He later became a successful optometrist, opening several Specsavers branches. Despite some cultural alienation in Bournemouth, he praised Britain’s relative openness and opportunity. Ramesh's toughest challenge came not from racism but interfaith tensions when he married a Sikh woman. He sees himself as a bridge-builder, integrating Indian and British values, and believes deeply in ethics, responsibility and balance.
