Surrinder Kaur

Surrinder Kaur, born in Birmingham but went back to India, moved to the UK in the early 1970s after marriage.

She settled in Chippenham, when she was 6 years old and recalls arriving during a time when there were very few South Asian families in the area. Life was initially challenging adjusting to a new culture, language barriers, and limited access to culturally appropriate food or clothing. Despite these difficulties, Surrinder found strength in her faith and community.

She raised her children with strong Sikh values, ensuring they remained rooted in their heritage while integrating into British society. Surrinder reflects proudly on how she maintained her cultural identity, she emphasises the importance of respect, family, and education, values that she sees thriving in her grandchildren today.

Surrinder is deeply grateful for the opportunities the UK provided but remains conscious of the personal sacrifices made by her generation.
